From Rupert's soon to be published book "The Bleeding Edge - Revolutionizing Software Development"

Book Teaser

"Rupert brings over 30 years of expertise in full-stack development, web design, and technology innovation. Having worked on complex systems such as Siyaleader, AIMS, and bVigilant, his solutions have been deployed across critical environments, including amongst many others, the South African Government, the Durban port, forensic investigation firms, and security companies. Rupert’s career spans a diverse range of projects, from consulting for big corporates to delivering cutting-edge solutions for startups, all with a focus on leveraging the latest web technologies, UX, and AI to drive business success.

Before finding his passion in technology, Rupert was on the path to becoming a journalist. His love for writing led him to contribute two weekly columns, Tricks & Traps and Hardcore, for The Sunday Tribune, where he explored software and hardware-related topics. Though his career took a pivotal turn towards technology, his background in writing has continued to play a role in his professional life, and it remains central to his work today as he publishes this book.

In addition to his technology work, Rupert also developed Fernwood, a prestigious co-ownership resort in the Champagne Castle valley of the central Drakensberg, reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit. As a co-founder of the South African Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) and through serving as CTO or CIO for a number of companies, Rupert has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation.

He also co-founded Mshtarii Development Academy, mentoring the next generation of developers and bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world industry demands.

Rupert’s philosophy is grounded in the belief that top-tier web and software solutions should be accessible to all businesses, not just large corporations. Now, with a wealth of experience, Rupert channels his knowledge into this essential guide, aimed at helping others thrive in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape."

More About Rupert

In Rupert's own words ...

So what's with the Bear?

Rupert Bear is an English children's comic strip character who I obviously share my name with. I enjoyed and shared an affinity with the stories as a kid, but I no longer resonate with the cuteness that many associate with the little bear. When I started thinking about how to visually represent my personal brand, I knew I wanted something with more weight and meaning - something that reflected my journey and the values I hold dear.

Grizzly Bear

Enter the grizzly bear ...

Grizzly bears are intelligent, resilient, and resourceful, traits that I’ve always admired. They’re strategic in their actions and capable of navigating complex environments with ease - qualities that parallel my approach to web development, video editing, and digital marketing. I chose a grizzly as my logo to symbolize not just strength, but the wisdom and experience I bring to every project.

The beret and military insignia? The term "veteran" in my domain, netveteran.co.za, reflects my years of Internet experience. The military aspect of the logo reflects discipline, precision, and dedication - values that shape everything I do, both in my career and in life.

And while it’s a bit of fun, the futuristic touch on the bear with an internet icon on the beret brings it full circle. It’s a reminder that while I’ve been in the game for a long time, I’m always looking forward - adapting, evolving, and embracing what’s next in the world of technology.

For over three decades, I’ve been passionate about helping businesses thrive in the digital world. From the early days of web development to helping build global businesses, I’ve always believed that quality digital solutions should be available to everyone - especially small businesses and startups that may not have deep pockets, but have big aspirations.

My journey began in the early 90s, when I founded Compudoc to offer IT solutions to businesses that needed personalized support. With the advent of the Internet in South Africa, this quickly expanded into the world of web development, and I’ve been deeply engaged ever since. One of my proudest moments was securing the largest web development contracts of the time with the South African Foundation for Education, Science, and Technology (24m), while simultaneously co-founding the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) in South Africa.

But despite working with large-scale projects, my heart has always been with the small business owner - the one who needs high-quality web development, video editing, and digital marketing services but can’t afford the high-end agencies. That’s why, in this phase of my life, I'm offering my services under the banner of Rupert, The Net Veteran. My goal is simple: to offer top-notch services at prices that work for businesses of all sizes. I've experienced a fair amount of success and I am committed to Co-operative Education.

Whether you need a website, AI integration, engaging social media content, a professional video that tells your story, or a captivating presentation, I’m here to help you succeed. I have worked with government, corporate entities and SME clients across South Africa, the United States, England, Australia, France, Germany, Singapore, and Mauritius, but no matter where you’re based, my approach remains the same - high-quality work, fair pricing, and a commitment to seeing your business grow.
